The art of painter and sculptor Kyle Damon creates boundaries with material, and then breaks them with paint. With found objects and architectural elements, the artist creates a structure, and then paints it by grating blocks of encaustic wax with a cheese grater. He melts the shavings, and reworks the less inspiring mistakes with a brush, or — to use a recent example — covers them with lead flashing. The final result is a collection of edited accidents, and an exploration of the interface between the element of surprise, and the "best laid plans". |
